Merlin - Vintage J W Brooke launch for sale at £20,000
Vintage J W Brooke launch Merlin for sale at £20,000
Built 1926 by Lowestoft’s J W Brooke & Co (later Brooke Marine)
Dimensions length 20ft, beam 5ft, draught 1ft 6in
Construction carvel mahogany on oak
Converted to electric power by Colin Buttifant at Swallowtail Boatyard
Merlin first appeared in a Brooke Motor Craft catalogue of the mid-1920s to fill “a gap in the market for a family runabout.” She is a four-seater carvel launch in mahogany on oak, and was delivered to her first owner on Norfolk’s River Yare almost 100 years ago. Originally called Pamela, she has the Broads registration Y5.
Since 2011 Merlin has occupied a boathouse on South Walsham Broad at the home of her current owner. She’s a smart, very pretty boat with a fold-down windscreen, folding hood, two wicker forward seats and a cushioned bench-seat aft.

Swallow - Slipper Launch For Sale at £30,000 or near offer

Swallow is a beautiful, traditional wooden Slipper Launch built by Andrews of Bourne End in 1932, a rare example with a curved, varnished hardwood “Turtle Deck”, and one of only three known to survive. In 2006 Swallow underwent a major refurbishment by Peter Freebody of Hurley. In 2008, she was converted to electric by Rupert Latham: she uses 1 kW for river cruising, so has ample range for a day out. The near silent cruising is a real joy. Since 2016, she has spent the warmer months at the owners’ private mooring in Shepperton, whilst in winter she is stored on the hard at Tom Jones Boatyard (formerly Stanley & Thomas) in Windsor, where she is maintained annually. She is currently available for viewing at the boatyard or, from mid-April, on the Thames at Shepperton.
